Deepest condolences to Maxine’s lovely family and her many colleagues. While I was unable to attend in person, those of us online could feel Maxine’s love, personality and legacy in the room. I acknowledge Maxine’s significant contribution to Nursing and Midwifery in Victoria,a true giant of our profession.

In Remembrance of Emeritus Professor Maxine Duke
I came to know Maxine better because one of her master’s students was Taiwanese. In 1997, she taught me during my undergraduate studies at La Trobe University, where she was one of the lecturers in my nursing philosophy class. I remember that she asked us to read papers by Benner, which left a lasting impression on me.
Many years later, when I was a PhD student, I met Benner and her late husband in Taiwan. Beyond my academic relationship with Maxine, I remember her as a warm person—kind, gentle, and a supportive listener.
During my studies at La Trobe University, Maxine was one of the role models who deeply moved me and later influenced me as I became a lecturer myself. At her funeral, Father described Maxine as an architect—someone who brought family, academia, and nursing together as one home. Her passing leaves a profound emptiness for all whose lives she touched.
Last night, before going to sleep, I watched her funeral service. It was sad to know that she has departed from this earth. However, her legacy will never end. Her passion and love will continue to be passed on in many different ways. May God bless her family and watch over them during this difficult time.
Hello Maxine. One day, we will meet again in our heavenly home.
